Picking Out Fall Gourds

You ready for a Fall field trip? We gotta get some gourds and enjoy the scenes of fall. Jump in and take a ride with me!

Off we go!  To a plant farm where you'll see much more than this amazing planted Chevy. It's a beautiful day and I've got some key tips to share with you about picking out fall gourds.

But first, you've gotta see these sights...

The fall foliage is fantastic. Say that fast five times!

Oh Yes. Lots more than plants to look at. Loads of really great rusty junk...

And even older modes of transportation than the Chevy.

There's a few farm animals...

You can't ride the donkey but she loves a good ear scratching!

You can ride the straw pony after making your way through the hay bale maze. Er... that is, the kids can ride it. ;)

And last, but not least, you can pick up a few plants and gourds. Oh right...that's what we came here for.

Here are a few quick tips about picking out gourds:

  • Ideally you'll want to visit a patch where they leave gourds on the vine until, or just before, the first light frost.
  • Add a tablespoon of bleach to a gallon of soapy water and wash the gourds to delay any mold taking hold.
  • Give 'em a natural glow with a light coat of non-glossy floor wax.
  • Pumpkin shells should be hard and shiny. If you can puncture a pumpkin shell with your fingernail it was harvested too early and is prone to rot.

You're going to laugh at what I did with these gourds! Check out Gobbler Gourds for the full scoop.

  9. I have a thing for old rusty trucks and this one is love at first sight! I love gourd gathering season. I use to paint about 60 Santa gourds for gifts, but stopped several years ago. I miss the annual gourd trips. Thanks for taking us along with you!

  10. What a wonderful field trip. I used to take my children on day trips to find treasures like these. This makes me want to go again, even if the 'kids' are too grown up to tag along.

  16. Great Fall field trip... Your gourd gobblers are adorable! We have loads of places around here that have wonderful rusty old farm equipment laying out in the pastures. The hubbers and I love taking drives in the country and snapping photos of them. I have to say, that's the first truck bed I've ever seen fully planted. Gorgeous!
